MOJO WORKOUT - All-Star Edition!

True Fact: Nights like these are the reason I wanted to become a DJ.

I would go to people's vinyl DJ nights when I was in my late teens and early twenties and watch in awe as the cool kids compared killer record and 45 collections while simultaneously setting the dance floor on fire with their perfectly timed selections. I wanted to be part of that cool club so bad....

And now here I am. I don't think I'm any cooler than I ever was but there aren't very many parties in this city anywhere near as cool as DJ Chico's, MOJO WORKOUT. Friday night, I'll be bringing my own killer selection of 45's and joining 6 of my favourite DJ's and record collectors to nerd out behind the decks and make a room full of the best people dance the night away. So make sure your plans include popping by The Yukon on Queen St. W. because everytime I've ever been there the night has turned into a house party where everyone at the bar becomes friends.

The first time I DJ'ed MOJO WORKOUT w/ DJ's Chico and Sean Dean

Records, killer DJ's, dancing and the best people becoming the best friends. Sounds like a pretty perfect start to the weekend!! RSVP: here

DJ Misty at #TIFF14

WHOA! What an awesome, awesome experience. This year, the Toronto International Film Festival went above and beyond to bring the first ever, "Festival Street" which transformed King St. into a giant party. I got to be part of the party and keep festival goers shimmying and shaking this past Saturday before and in between acts, choir! choir! choir!, Buck 65, The Dears and DJ Sven Love on the Rdio & Steve and Rashmi Gupta Festival Stage.

Thanks for the picture, Kevin!
I may not have gotten a chance to fangirl over Robert Downey Jr. in the flesh but I did meet lots of rad friends and DJ for a lot of new faces. Here's to another successful TIFF, and I'm so happy I could be part of it!

Amy.

It's been 3 years today. RIP Amy Winehouse. I don't know why her death hit me as hard as it did (and still does) but her talent and voice were from an era well before her time. She made music that was raw, real and impacted me in the way I feel when I hear songs like Big Mama Thornton's 'Hound Dog' or Gloria Jones' 'Tainted Love'. Goosebumps.

Nick Waterhouse at The Horseshoe Tavern

DJ Misty and Nick Waterhouse
When it was announced that neo-soul/vintage r&b musician Nick Waterhouse (who I've been gushing about for a couple of years now) was coming back to Toronto to play the Horseshoe Tavern this Feb 22, I thought I couldn't be anymore excited. But then I was invited to join DJ Chico to spin some records at the gig and I learned that yep, I could be even more excited!

Happy and feeling at home behind the turntables at the Nick Waterhouse show at the Horseshoe Tavern Feb 22/14
Toronto's indie-garage group The BB Guns were also on the bill and they didn't disappoint, proving that Toronto can do dreamy, beachy pop music as well as our West Coast counterparts. DJ Chico and I played vintage r&b, soul and rock n' roll records and 45's to keep the energy up before, in between and after the bands. I have to admit, I was a lil nervous but when I saw people dancing I relaxed and when some of the members Nick's band were cutting a rug I knew we were doing just fine. :)

DJ's Chico and Misty
And of course, Nick Waterhouse killed it. He played songs from his debut album, "Time's All Gone" as well as off his upcoming follow-up, "Holly" and even peppered his set with some pretty incredible covers. Nick honored some of his favourite artists like Jackie Shane, Sky Saxon (The Seeds), Isaac "Red" Holt, Wayne Bennett and Ty Segall and drove the audience into a frenzy. After the show, Nick described the audience as being the best he's had all tour which came as a surprise (knowing this city), but made me beam with Toronto pride all the same.

If you missed the show, you can check out of some his performance featuring the title track from his upcoming sophomore album, "Holly" which comes out March 4th.

Patrick Krief - Simple Lives

A couple of months ago I was invited to be part of a music video for Patrick Krief (The Dears) and his new song 'Simple Lives.' Other than having to make funny faces and lip sync under some pretty groovy lights I kind of had no idea what to expect with the end result. It's finally up and looks amazing!

I even got the beard I've always wanted!

Check out the video featuring yours truly and some friends:

A little bit of horseplay on set.
