Nick Waterhouse at The Horseshoe Tavern

DJ Misty and Nick Waterhouse
When it was announced that neo-soul/vintage r&b musician Nick Waterhouse (who I've been gushing about for a couple of years now) was coming back to Toronto to play the Horseshoe Tavern this Feb 22, I thought I couldn't be anymore excited. But then I was invited to join DJ Chico to spin some records at the gig and I learned that yep, I could be even more excited!

Happy and feeling at home behind the turntables at the Nick Waterhouse show at the Horseshoe Tavern Feb 22/14
Toronto's indie-garage group The BB Guns were also on the bill and they didn't disappoint, proving that Toronto can do dreamy, beachy pop music as well as our West Coast counterparts. DJ Chico and I played vintage r&b, soul and rock n' roll records and 45's to keep the energy up before, in between and after the bands. I have to admit, I was a lil nervous but when I saw people dancing I relaxed and when some of the members Nick's band were cutting a rug I knew we were doing just fine. :)

And of course, Nick Waterhouse killed it. He played songs from his debut album, "Time's All Gone" as well as off his upcoming follow-up, "Holly" and even peppered his set with some pretty incredible covers. Nick honored some of his favourite artists like Jackie Shane, Sky Saxon (The Seeds), Isaac "Red" Holt, Wayne Bennett and Ty Segall and drove the audience into a frenzy. After the show, Nick described the audience as being the best he's had all tour which came as a surprise (knowing this city), but made me beam with Toronto pride all the same.

If you missed the show, you can check out of some his performance featuring the title track from his upcoming sophomore album, "Holly" which comes out March 4th.

Patrick Krief - Simple Lives

A couple of months ago I was invited to be part of a music video for Patrick Krief (The Dears) and his new song 'Simple Lives.' Other than having to make funny faces and lip sync under some pretty groovy lights I kind of had no idea what to expect with the end result. It's finally up and looks amazing!

I even got the beard I've always wanted!

Check out the video featuring yours truly and some friends:

HAPPY 2014! 2013 Was Epic.

Happy (slightly belated) New Year! And what a year it's been. Early 2013, I was making plans to go to NYC and Los Angeles and daydreaming about how cool it would be if I could DJ there. Fast forward a few months and I started thinking, wait, why don't I DJ there?! So I got in touch with some friends and wiggled my nose and things started happening.

First up, most excellent party people, Good Kids brought one of their epic parties, Motown Party, to Brooklyn and asked yours truly to come along for the ride. I made my NYC DJ debut one month shy of my 30th Birthday, and began a love affair with a city I've been lucky enough to keep coming back to and DJ parties in ever since.

See for yourself how much fun we had!

One month after I lost my New York v-card, I was on the opposite coast with the pleasure of getting to know the Vinyl Record Association; Reverend Martini, and DJ's Zorch, Astro 138 and Rockin' Vic. They made me feel at home both on the dancefloor and behind the turntables while we made California shake with our killer 45's of vintage r&b, soul and rock n' roll. Definitely a week I'll never forget and can't wait to come back and repeat!

Since then I've been fortunate enough to keep travelling, and haven't slowed down yet. 2013 was also the year that I got to make some headlines at home here in Toronto. I was lucky enough to get to DJ Canada's biggest burlesque festival (which featured the legendary lady, TEMPEST STORM!) and DJ some epic parties for G33KPRON and Silver Snail Comics. I was also invited to join the incredible gals of Bangs & Blush once a month to guest DJ their 50's/60's dance party, Shake Rattle & Roll and even got to fly to Halifax to be a special guest at Let's Riot's East Coast Rockabilly Weekend not to mention DJ some pretty amazing gigs with the Shindig! all vinyl crew both at The Piston and on the ice at the Harbourfront Centre. Just to name a few. :)

I really hope I don't sound like I'm bragging, but it's been the best year of my life and I couldn't be more grateful. Not just for the amazing opportunities, but for support from my family, friends and everyone I've met and danced with along the way. I can't wait to see what 2014 is going to bring and this year I've got even bigger plans! My calendar is already filled with events and parties I'm really excited about.

This coming weekend I'll be playing anything and everything awesome from the 1950's right up until now all night long at the very tasty, Two Bite Saloon at Bloor and Ossington. And next month you can find me at a brand new party called Pussy Whipped Wednesdays at my favourite rock n' roll haven, Bovine Sex Club as well as returning to Velvet Underground for the wildest night of the month; Born To Party. I'm also continuing to hold it down once a month with the amazing Holly at Toronto's favourite 50's/60's dance party, Shake Rattle & Roll. So stay tuned!

Around the Continent in 31 Days

Whew! If October was any indication, life is crazy and busy and awesome. In the span of one month my toes have been lucky enough to touch down in Halifax, Los Angeles and NYC in addition to my home here in Toronto. With that much excitement, it's going to be really hard to slow down now that I'm back so I think I'll just stay busy with great things.

Flying over Manhattan/NYC and gee are my arms tired!

Starting with my big kid job! I recently moved from being a community housing worker with a rotating schedule that included many mind numbing graveyard shifts to a 9-5 housing worker position. What that means is now I'm working one on one with clients in the shelter to help them find, secure and keep housing. It also means I do a lot of fighting and advocating for safe, affordable housing here in Toronto.

I'm keeping plenty busy with DJ gigs too, and you'll be able to find me getting a party started every week! Starting off November is one of my best girlfriend's big 30th birthday party. It's happening this Saturday night at Velvet Underground, where her and I spent many a night in our early twenties trying to master our best pseudo-goth dance moves and this weekend we're busting them back out. If you join us, you can expect lots of retro 80's and 90's, new rock and alternative and maybe a lil bit of goth goodness to remind us that we were BORN TO PARTY!

There's so many more that I'll keep adding over the next little bit, plus some from a couple earlier trips over the summer that I took. NYC, LA... I love them both but Toronto is my home, sweet home. xo.
